What We Know About the Plot So Far
Though no official plot details have been released, director Matt Shakman has teased that the Fantastic Four reboot will take a fresh approach to the material while staying true to the comics. He aims to keep the story grounded in scientific intrigue, blending the cosmic and the familiar in a way that's unique to the Fantastic Four franchise. Shakman hinted that the adaptation would offer something distinctly different from what audiences have seen in the MCU so far.
The Origins of the Fantastic Four in the comics
The Fantastic Four, Marvel’s First Family, was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, debuting in Fantastic Four #1 in 1961. The team consists of Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ben Grimm (The Thing). Their powers originate from a mission to space that exposed them to cosmic rays, causing Richards to develop the ability to stretch his body, Sue Storm to become invisible and generate force fields, Johnny Storm to control fire and fly, and Ben Grimm to transform into a rock-like super-strong humanoid.
Despite their newfound powers, the Fantastic Four are bound by strong family-like bonds. Reed Richards and Sue Storm share a deep romantic relationship, ultimately leading to marriage, while Johnny Storm, Sue's brother, maintains a playful sibling rivalry with her. Ben Grimm, Reed's college friend, struggles with his transformation into The Thing but finds solace in the camaraderie and unwavering support of his teammates. Together, this eclectic group navigates cosmic threats, villainous adversaries, and personal challenges, embodying resilience, teamwork, and the spirit of family. Their dynamic mix of personalities and abilities, combined with their loyalty and love for one another, solidifies their status as Marvel's pioneering superhero family.
Introduction to the "Galactus Trilogy"
In Marvel Comics lore, the "Galactus Trilogy" is a three-part story arc that first appeared in Fantastic Four #48-50, written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Jack Kirby. This iconic storyline introduces Galactus, the cosmic entity who devours planets to sustain his life force, and his herald, the Silver Surfer. It all starts with the arrival of the Silver Surfer, who prepares Earth for Galactus's impending consumption. The Fantastic Four band together to stop the world-eating threat, and with the help of Uatu the Watcher and the Human Torch wielding the Ultimate Nullifier (a device capable of destroying anything, even Galactus), they compel Galactus to spare Earth. During the conflict, Surfer, seeing the good in the people and heroes of Earth takes a stand against Galactus. As punishment for betraying Galactus, the Silver Surfer is banished to Earth, unable to traverse the cosmos.
The Silver Surfer and Shalla-Bal
In the original comics, Norrin Radd, known as the Silver Surfer, becomes Galactus's herald to save his home planet of Zenn-La. His love for Shalla-Bal, a native of Zenn-La, motivates this self-sacrifice. Separated from her due to his servitude to Galactus, Norrin longs to reunite with her. The tragedy of their separation plays a crucial role in shaping the Silver Surfer's character.
In the alternate universe of Earth X (Earth-9997), however, Shalla-Bal herself becomes the Silver Surfer, heralding Galactus across the cosmos. In this world, Galactus consumes celestial embryos growing within planets. This version of Shalla-Bal exemplifies a darker iteration of the herald, one driven by necessity and despair after the destruction of Zenn-La.
Potential Plot Points and Secret Wars Connections
Of course, the inclusion of Galactus and Shalla-Bal suggests a storyline that heavily borrows from the "Galactus Trilogy" but with an MCU twist. Here are some possibilities:
Incursions and Multiverse: The concept of incursions (parallel universes colliding) was introduced in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and further explored in Loki. This could be linked to Galactus as a cosmic entity trying to avert multiversal collapse by devouring worlds. The incursion storyline is directly tied to Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars (2015).
Doctor Doom and Battleworld: If Fantastic Four introduces Doctor Doom, played by a yet-to-be-disclosed actor, he could become a significant force in the movie's potential Secret Wars plot. In Hickman's storyline, Doom reshapes the multiverse into Battleworld and appoints himself as God Emperor. The Fantastic Four's quest to overthrow Doom ties deeply into their complex relationship with him.
Ultimate Nullifier and the Watcher: The introduction of the Ultimate Nullifier, possibly revealed by Uatu the Watcher, could be pivotal in the team's defense against Galactus. The Watcher's role, introduced in What If…?, might be expanded to include his historical connection with the Fantastic Four.
Fan Theory: Alternate Universe Four
Because In the Marvel Comics' Earth X story, Galactus consumes celestial embryos growing within planets to prevent their devastating emergence, an interesting fan theory has emerged (pun intended) in my mind. Shalla-Bal as the Silver Surfer, an actual comic alternate universe storyline could mean the Fantastic Four movie actually takes place in an alternate universe, & there’s some actual evidence to support this idea:
The Eternals - The Eternals movie in its entirety actually gives validity to this theory. One of the movie’s biggest fan criticisms is that the Eternals were on Earth throughout the entirety of the MCUs history. Meaning that they sat back and observed multiple threats to the planet they had the power to stop, or at least help stop. But what if they didn’t help, because those events, Like the Chitauri invasion or the Battle of Wakanda, didn’t happen in the Eternal’s Universe? Additionally, the emergence of Tiamut, the Celestial, is partially halted by the Eternals, leaving a massive, frozen Celestial sticking out of the ocean. However, the lack of acknowledgment of Tiamut's emergence in subsequent MCU projects raises intriguing questions as well. UNLESS that event hasn’t been mentioned because it didn’t happen in the MCU’s 616 universe. This could mean that Tiamaut’s emergence could be what attracts Shalla-Bal’s attention, leading Galactus to Earth (X). This would also mean Marvel has been spinning a masterful tale with it’s Multiverse storyline.
Impact on the MCU
The Fantastic Four reboot promises to be a crucial installment in the MCU. With Ralph Ineson's casting as Galactus and Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal, the film opens a window to fascinating possibilities, connecting classic comic arcs like the "Galactus Trilogy" with the cosmic, multiverse-spanning ambitions of the MCU. Whether it draws from the original Secret Wars or the God Emperor Doom saga, the movie is set to shape Marvel's future and cement the Fantastic Four's legacy in this universe.
